According to Alberta Education, students who are gifted demonstrate exceptional potential and/or performance in one or more of the following ability areas:
- intelligence
- academic
- creativity
- social/leadership
- musical
- artistic
- athletic
After a student has been identified as being gifted, the school is required to develop and implement an Individual Program Plan (IPP) designed to address the student’s exceptional learning needs. The provision of an IPP allows students who are gifted to continue to attend their regular school. Students who are gifted may choose to attend alternative school programs that address their exceptional interests and skills (e.g., immersion language programs, performing arts programs, science programs). In some school districts, students who are gifted may also attend congregated educational programs specifically designed for those who are gifted.
