While it is common for students to feel stressed and/or sad in certain situations, certain mood disorders (e.g., anxiety, depression) are characterized by extremely intense feelings. These feelings can be so severe that they interfere significantly with the student’s ability to cope with daily functioning. Mood disorders can lead to poor academic achievement, difficulty getting along with others, and a general decreased quality of life. A student may demonstrate behaviour consistent with a mood disorder when in fact they are struggling with another undiagnosed disorder (e.g., learning disability, ADHD).
