Underachievement occurs when a student is not performing academically at the level expected. Students who demonstrate underachievement may have weaknesses in the following areas:
- learning strategies
- study skills
- organizational skills
- time management skills
- test-taking skills
- motivation
- frustration tolerance
A psychoeducational assessment for a student who presents with underachievement can provide valuable information regarding possible gaps in strategies, skills, and/or approaches to learning. Awareness of this information can guide informal remediation so that the student might then be better able to realize their academic potential.
